普遍認知(2/14)－ 情人節的由來
最有名的說法是在3世紀，古羅馬暴君為了充實兵力，逼令所有單身男性公民從軍，不許結婚。一名叫瓦倫丁（Valentine，又作華倫泰）的基督教修士不理禁令，秘密替人証婚，結果被士兵逮捕，269年2月14日被絞死；為紀念瓦倫丁的勇敢精神，人們將每年的2月14日定為瓦倫丁紀念日，成了後來的「情人節」。據《世界圖書百科全書》（World Book Encyclopedia）資料指出：「在公元後200年時期，羅馬皇帝克勞狄二世禁止年輕男子結婚。他認為未婚男子可以成為更優良的士兵。一位名叫瓦倫丁的教士違反了皇帝的命令，秘密為年輕男子主持婚禮，引起皇帝不滿，結果被收監，據說瓦倫丁於公元269年2月14日被處決。」另外，據記載，教宗在496年廢除牧神節，把2月14日定為聖瓦倫丁日，後來成為西方的節日之一。深受西方的文化影響，這個節日在西方以外的地方漸受注重。
情人節文化
情侶們在情人節當日的晚餐約會，是常見的情人節活動之一，有人視之為情侶關係的發展關鍵時刻。一些商家會在情人節促銷商品作為情人節禮物，常見的如巧克力、鮮花到首飾珠寶等，時至今日，因應世界各地的個別文化，慶祝節日型式及禮品種類包羅萬有。
除了羅馬，各國對於自己的情人節都有它們的特殊由來及文化。
譬如以色列的情人節叫做「Tu B』Av」，原本是個猶太人重要的傳統節日；根據《塔木德》記載，古時的八月底是慶祝葡萄豐收的季節，未婚女子會穿著白色裙子在葡萄園內載歌載舞以歡慶豐收。不過，這個宗教意義也已經逐漸被遺忘，人們改在這天結婚、訂婚，或者是安排一場浪漫的約會。
荷蘭人的慶祝方式則十分有趣，他們認為一雙漂亮的傳統木鞋才是最好的情人節禮物。
